What I learned this holiday season

Christmas 2013It’s been an interesting holiday season. I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but… I’m relieved that it’s almost over. This has been a hard year, and I’m really looking forward to 2014. Getting through the past month has been difficult, but I’ve learned a lot of important things this time around…

  1. It’s okay to not go overboard. In fact, sometimes it’s okay to do the exact minimum needed to get by. Usually, I design and send out Christmas cards, bake a large variety of goodies, and do lots of shopping. This year, I didn’t. Heck, I didn’t even put up my Christmas tree… or listen to Christmas music… and I only watched a handful of Christmas movies. But it was a lot less stressful than it normally is and I was pretty okay with that. In fact, I’ve learned what it is that I really miss doing. Next year, I can cut back on a lot and do only what I really love doing for the holiday season.
  2. New traditions can be just as great as old ones. Last year, John and I celebrated our own Christmas the weekend before the 25th. Presents, and a nice dinner of duck and roasted veggies… we enjoyed it so much that decided it would be our own little tradition every year. This was what I was looking to more than anything else this year, and I’m happy that we’ve made it our own little tradition.
  3. I actually like working between Christmas and New Years. This is the second time I haven’t taken vacation days during the holidays. Work is a lot quieter during this time, and I have found that it is a nice break from the hecticness that is going on everywhere else. The quieter atmosphere gave me a much needed chance to recharge before the next round of Christmas visits/parties/social obligations/etc.
  4. It’s okay to get away when I need to. During busy days I needed to take a break from people in order to bring my anxiety under control. Plus, my anxiety medication causes extreme drowsiness and I find it very difficult to stay awake all day at the best of times… and my medication shouldn’t be mixed with caffeine. I found if I didn’t take some quiet time every day, I was on edge and not good to be around. But if I had an hour away from everyone, I was able to make it through even the busiest of days.
